Learning first aid

rightminifirstaid

A few weeks ago I had a terrifying experience at home that I now feel able to talk about without breaking down in tears! sounds dramatic I know, but when Rosie had a febrile seizure/convulsion I had no idea what to do, how to react, how to help … I felt completely useless.

Febrile seizures / convulsions are surprisingly common among young children and usually occur at the beginning of a cold/virus.  They happen when a the child’s temperature is too high and it’s the bodies natural way of shutting down and cooling down.

On the day that it happened to Rosie, she was absolutely fine, showing no signs of becoming ill.  One minute she was happily eating her dinner and the next she was shaking violently and then collapsed unconscious. Thankfully I was sitting next to her and was able to stop her from falling off her chair.

The next fifteen minutes were the longest and most horrific fifteen minutes of my life. Holding little Rosie in my arms and running outside shouting for help was how I responded to the situation.  I felt completely torn about what to do, I couldn’t remember the basics in first aid, let alone how to do CPR!

Luckily my good friends / neighbours came running to our aid, called an ambulance and helped calm a screaming baby Ruby down. I was a trembling mess, struggling to stay calm and constantly feeling ashamed and angry at myself for not learning the basics in first aid.

When the ambulance crew arrived they quickly calmed us all down and described how common these frightening seizures are, and that Rosie would be absolutely fine.  I can’t describe the relief and emotions that rushed through me at this point.  Rosie took about fifteen minutes to regain consciousness and was taken to hospital for a few checks. She came home about seven hours later. The next morning she had a cold and a cough.

I spent the next day looking for a way that I could learn the basics in first aid, so that I would hopefully have a better idea of how to react in any future scary situations that may occur.

I decided to book a group session with the lovely Kate (owner of Mini First Aid).  We gathered a small group of friends together at my home (8 of us in total) and shared the cost of the two hour session. It worked out at £20 each. (A total bargain!)

Kate’s first aid sessions are tailored specifically for parents, carers etc. To help give confidence in handling the more common medical emergency situations.

I can’t stress enough how much we all learnt from Kate. She had a wonderful way of teaching and I do actually feel more confident now about my knowledge in basic first aid.

I just want to say a huge thank you to Kate for booking us in at such short notice and for being such a fantastic teacher! I will be recommending Mini First Aid to everyone.

I was actually put to the test last week when Rosie cut her head open! I managed to remain calm and treat the wound correctly, and daddy took Rosie to the minor injuries unit nearby.

Do you know first aid? do you know where your local minor injury units / hospitals are?

Please please please learn the basics in first aid.  Especially if you are a parent. You could save someones life.

Thanks for reading x

Shaving foam fun tray

image

Yesterday we experimented with another idea I’ve seen suggested a few times on blogs / Pinterest etc. Basically a tub full of shaving foam!

Rosie was intrigued by the mysterious goo / snow. I popped a few measuring spoons and plastic animals / Lego men in to the mix and just watched to see how Rosie would interact with the gloop! She was very cautious at first and didn’t want to get any on her fingers but gradually got a little braver. Although she never did want to get much on her hands!

image

I gave her a water sprayer and a tub of water to wash her toys with and she started to enjoy it more then. She even went and sourced her garden ornament rabbit and washed his hair.

image

After a little while I gave Rosie some food colouring to drop in the foam and stir up.

This activity didn’t entertain Rosie for as long as the Rice tray did (previous post) but Rosie did enjoy it.

Have you tried any sensory fun tub ideas? Please share them here if you can.

Caterpillar in a hat

Caterpillar in a hat

Today’s lunch plate was created in about five minutes. Everything has do be done quickly in my life at the moment! With a newborn and a two year old there’s not much time to faff about with food creations.
I usually start my creations by gathering food that needs eating up and a big plate and Just get fiddling with the food until I come up with an idea. I also eat all the leftovers and off cuts – achieving my lunch in the process!

Sensory play with Rice

I’ve recently discovered how much fun Rosie can have with trays full of random things!

Image

There are so many ideas for sensory trays and activities all over Pinterest, facebook, parenting blogs. I thought I’d give it a try!

I simply filled a large tupaware base with a bag of rice, a bowl, a large baking dish, a measuring spoon, a plastic bottle cut in half, some straws, lolly pop sticks and half an egg box.

Image

Rosie loved playing with it, we set it up on a table outside – as you can imagine the rice went everywhere! Rosie spent ages experimenting with the containers, making imaginary birthday cakes etc. She then added a penguin and some Pom poms and played hide and seek with them in the rice.

Image

I would definitely try this activity again … But there are so many more ideas I want to try. I’ll keep you posted with other activities we discover.

Have you discovered any fun sensory activities you’d like to share? Feel free to tell us about them in the comments below.

A life lesson learnt. … Do you know First aid?

Yesterday I was given a huge reminder of how special everyday is, and how we need to treasure every moment with our children and the people we love.

I’m writing this blog post with tears in my eyes, and a huge feeling of relief that everything is now ok, but yesterday I had the most frightening experience I’ve ever had.

I really don’t want to go in to the details here as I need to shift some awful memories and visions out of my mind but all I do want to say is I realised yesterday how important it is that I do a first aid course. I don’t even remember the basics and when put to the test like I was yesterday I really had little idea of what to do and felt entirely useless and helpless.

I did a first aid course about 13 years ago when I worked briefly as a lifeguard but remembered very little about what I had learnt.

I’m going to look in to first aid courses today and I urge you all to do the same.

Have you done a first aid course? Can you recommend a course  in Yorkshire that would let me bring a baby along too? Or someone that could teach the basics on a one to one basis?

Xx

Have you discovered Cheeky wipes? …

Image

This week I’ve rediscovered my love for the fabulous ‘Cheeky wipes’.

Cheeky wipes are fantastic quality, washable baby wipe kits that save you a tonne of money, are gentle on baby bottoms, better for the environment and they smell amazing – What’s not to love!

The all in one kit is simple but brilliant.  You have a choice of wipes, I chose the bamboo and the terry towelling ones. They are super soft, and in my opinion they work so much better than disposable baby wipes. They remove the stubborn poop quickly and gently and you can usually do a proper clean up with just one baby wipe (compared to using 2 to 4 disposables!).

The kit comes with two boxes, ones a ‘mucky’ box and ones a ‘fresh’ box. You just pop some fresh water in each, and pop a few drops of your chosen essential oil blends in there too. You can order the oils from the Cheeky Wipes website – where you will see which ones they recommend for the different boxes.  You can fit about 25 wipes in the ‘fresh’ box and they stay fresh for a couple of days. You can also order a mesh bag for the ‘mucky’ box so you can simply lift the dirty wipes out and swiftly pop them in with your other washing.

If you are interested in finding out more about these fab kits, pop over to the Cheeky Wipes website

I used the kit when Rosie was a baby and loved it, and to be honest I’m not sure why I stopped. I think I just got a little lazy when she started using the potty more frequently, and found it easier to have packet’s of baby wipes in all rooms of the house. I really should have used the fab wet bag pouches that come with the kit! Anyway, having Ruby has given me the urge to start again with the Cheeky wipes. I’m determined to stop wasting so much money on disposable baby wipes.

I’m also thinking about investing in the ‘face and hand wipe kit‘  and perhaps the ‘Sanitary pad kit too’!

Do you use them already? Would love to hear some of your feedback and comments on the product.

Happy wiping!

x

Creative fun with Lightbulb Letters

Rosie loved getting stuck in to the Lightbulb Letter pack of goodies

Rosie loved getting stuck in to the Lightbulb Letter pack of goodies

A rainy day makes a perfect day for arts and crafts,  so today was the perfect day for opening the exciting parcel sent to Rosie from from Lightbulb Letters!

Rosies reaction to seeing the contents of the parcel was a great big “WOW!”

In our house we love to get the art box out – getting arty is Rosie’s favourite thing to do (just like it was mine when I was little- she’s a mini me really) But sometimes I find it a little tricky to think of original things to make, draw and create, especially when I have had very little sleep (which is usually most days!) or I’m multi tasking and doing too many things at once.

The Lightbulb letters May pack was sent to Rosie for free for review purposes and I honestly thought it was great, a box of fresh inspiration for Rosie and I.  We spent a good couple of hours creating things (which in toddler time is the equivalent of a week) and we still have other things left to get stuck in to when we next fancy trying some new ideas.

E42A7598

Each month the creators of Lightbulb letters create a new pack with a different theme, containing all you need for four crafts, plus doodle sheets and other bits and bobs (we needed to have our own glue, scissors and pens).  The may pack was a space theme which was fab. I loved the fact that each craft idea came with enough materials for both Rosie and I to attempt it. Rosie could watch me and follow what I was doing or she could do her own thing. I thought this was a great feature of the pack.

Together we created alien masks, Rockets, planets and a few different doodles and drawings.

Rosie's favourite craft was the alien mask making

E42A7619I’m going to have to order more Lightbulb Letter packs now (for my uninspired days) … and it’s actually inspired me to get my thinking hat on and create better craft ideas of my own.

Check out the Facebook page for prices ( very reasonable they are too!) and for more detailed information.

Beautiful skincare products and a gorgeous Giveaway worth £25!!

The lovely products 'My Roo' sent me to try on Ruby!

The lovely products ‘My Roo’ sent me to try on Ruby! – (Photo- ©Gemma Leak Photography Ltd)

When I became a mum I also became more aware of all the harmful chemicals used in the products I was using every day. I’d previously paid little attention to the ingredients in cleaning products, detergents, skincare lotions etc.

Having new responsibilities as a parent I felt that I needed to start making a conscious effort to try and use more natural, eco friendly products wherever possible.  I was actually quite shocked to discover that many of the popular brands targeted as baby safe products are actually full of all the horrid kinds of chemicals I was trying to avoid!

I first discovered the Myroo skincare range when I met Rachael in 2010. The lovely Rachael (Founder of Myroo) has formulated some fabulous skin care products from natural ingredients that are gentle and super kind on the skin. Rachael originally began making skincare products for her children when she couldn’t find anything gentle enough for their sensitive skin. When Rachael’s friends tried her creations on their children and loved them too – Rachael soon decided to launch her fab Myroo company.

I bought a box full of  Myroo baby skincare goodies back in 2011 to use when Rosie was a baby and loved them. Rosie had sensitive eczema prone skin and the Myroo (also known as Milly and Flossy) products worked well for her. As Rosie has grown older her allergies seem to have calmed down but I am keen to carry on using natural products wherever possible.

Last week I received a gorgeous package of  ‘Myroo’ goodies to try out on my little baby Ruby! I was a little excited when the box of treats arrived.  Rachael sent me a baby soap, baby balm and a lavender baby milk bath to try. I can happily say I loved all three products!

My Roo Baby Balm

The baby balm is wonderful, it smells lovely, feels soft and silky on the skin and works well for baby massage, dry bits, baby bums etc. (I may have used it on me too .. as it’s such a great moisturiser!) I’ve been using this on most nappy changes for the last few days.

Last night I had a gorgeous soak in the bath with Ruby – the Baby Milk Bath has a subtle lavender scent and leaves the water feeling silky soft.  The soap is great too, I also tried this on Rosie when she jumped in to join us!

I would definitely recommend these products to other parents, I think they would also make wonderful new baby gifts. I will no doubt be buying from the Myroo range in the future. I’m quite keen to try some of the other products available to order through the website too! they all sound divine if you ask me. Myroo also have a facebook group. Please do pop along and ‘Like’ it if you can. (click here)

GIVEAWAY … worth £25!

If you would like a chance to win £25 worth of Myroo products all you have to do is write down the products you would like to win (of a value up to £25) in the comment box below. There are all sorts of brilliant products to choose from (not just baby products)To see the skincare products available visit the My Roo website  (click here).

On the 4th June at 4pm I will pop all the entry names in a hat and draw a winner. The winner will then receive their chosen products direct from Rachael at My Roo.

‘ A huge thanks to Rachael for this great giveaway! xx’

The baby soap shown in this review is not yet on the website but it is available to order at £4. The baby balm and baby milk bath are in the baby section on the My Roo website (they are shown as Milly & Flossy, but would be delivered with the new packaging on as shown in the photographs I have captured)

(Please note: I received the Myroo products for free for review purposes. All comments in this post are my own.)

Wraps and swaddles by Hana Baby… plus a fab giveaway!

I’m a huge fan of carrying my babies in a Hana baby wrap.  The benefits to carrying a baby this way are endless!  It feels so wonderful having your little baby all snug next to your heart. To me it feels like the safest and most natural place  to have my precious little bundle.

Carrying 5 month Rosie in May 2014

Carrying baby Rosie in 2012

When Rosie was a baby she loved being in the wrap, I would pop her in it as much as possible. It was a sad day when I felt I could no longer carry her around (she was about 8 months) as I had problems with pelvic pain. I’m sure I’d still be carrying her in a the sling now if I’d been physically able too!

I was just a little bit giddy to order a new beautiful Hana sling for my new beautiful baby Ruby.  I chose a gorgeous purple this time, and I’ve worn it nearly everyday since Ruby was born.

3 week old Ruby 2014

Carrying baby Ruby last week

I find that if all else fails to calm a windy/wrestless/overtired Ruby  –  as soon as I pop her in the wrap she becomes a happy and relaxed baby once again (Rosie was exactly the same)  I love to see how quickly the look of pure contentment fills Ruby’s little face, staring at me with her beautiful eyes. Her little body relaxes and calms.  I treasure these moments.

The Hana baby wrap is made with a gorgeous soft and silky bamboo and organic cotton mix fabric. Its light and breathable, and it’s super comfortable.  I wear it for walking, doing chores, cooking,  playing with Rosie … anytime I can really!

I love to have skin to skin cuddles in it as much as possible and it’s a handy item to wear whilst breastfeeding.

Check out the website for a full list of the Hana baby wrap features.

Ruby testing out the swaddle pod

Ruby testing out the swaddle pod

When ordering my second Hana sling recently I emailed Melissa at Hana Baby to let her know I would be writing a little bit about how much I love their baby wraps. She responded promptly and to my delight she offered to send me one of their fabulous swaddle pods to try out and review on the blog!

We received the swaddle pod last week and I’ve used it for three nights now and I can honestly say it’s fantastic!  The fabric is gorgeous, its silky, soft, light and stretchy and feels snug but not tight against Ruby’s body.  She seems to love it too! She can still stretch out properly and move her legs and arms, but she can’t get her arms out to bop herself in the face (the startle reflex). I love the fact that it has a zip too – which can be opened from the bottom or the top.  It means I can change Ruby’s nappy in the night without too much disturbance.

Ruby all snug and happy

I’ve tried several other swaddle type products, (one had really noisy velcro which woke baby!) and I’ve found that Ruby can get her hands out of any other type of swaddling I have tried. Rosie was also a super wriggly baby, and I wish I’d discovered the Hana swaddle pod for her!

Here are a few of the great bamboo features (text from the Hana Baby website):

  • The Hana swaddle envelops your baby in super soft and stretchy bamboo.
  • Bamboo fabric is cashmere soft, naturally anti-bacterial and hypoallergenic, making it the perfect choice for your baby. ·
  • Bamboo fabric is up to three times more breathable than cotton, and naturally helps to regulate your baby’s body temperature.
  • Bamboo fabric is thermo-regulating, keeping your baby cool on hot days and warm in colder weather.

I am definitely ordering more of these fab swaddle pods.  I’m not sure I want to risk causing a sleepless night without it!

Ruby fast asleep in the Swaddle pod

I’m also adding the Hana swaddle pod to my list of things to recommend as a baby / new mummy gift. (… this could be an idea for another blog post maybe?!)

GIVEAWAY … Hana Baby have kindly offered up a Swaddle pod as a fab giveaway to one of ‘ Rosie and Ruby love … ‘ blog readers!

All you have to do is write in the comment box below: your choice of colour (see website here for colour options) and your preferred size (0-3 months or 3-6 months) I will pop all names in a hat and draw one out at random. The deadline to enter will be 4pm Friday 30th May 2014.

It would be great if you could share this post with your friends via facebook, twitter etc.

Thanks for reading! x
